Positive Disturbance Album Review: Chasing Distance, or Success?

Late in 2014, I did a piece inspired by  a bout of local shows I had gone to around Christmas, including Battle of The Bands at the classic Houston venue Fitzgerald’s (side note, if you can ever catch one of these going out, don’t hesitate to. It’s like a music fanatic’s personal holiday.) One of the bands from that very article , Positive Disturbance, has been making waves in local territory and beyond for the five months since my last meeting with them, and it’s obvious for all to see. From playing at SXSW in Austin this year, performing on the famous Sunset Strip in California, and dominating TxFest, their debut album “Chasing Distance” has been doing exactly that; and it’s reached pretty far. Here’s your up close look at the magic in the music.

“Chasing Distance” is an album that perfectly captures Positive Disturbance’s elements of sincerity and passion. Since I’d be here for hours if I were to give you every part of this album that’s notable – because technically, that’s the whole thing – there’s a few star songs I can’t be selfish and keep to myself. The title track that has been recently featured on Houston’s prime rock station 94.5 The Buzz, is a calmer, catchy tune that leaves room to focus on the lyrics, bringing a message of following your dreams and pushing your limits to find yourself. There’s a few other tracks in the same suave, almost reggae style accompanied by others that are the complete opposite: fast paced, determined, a vital message hidden between the notes. One such song is “Waiting for It”, number seven on the album. This one leads more towards a rock hip hop blend infused with a stellar guitar focus and strong vocals. However, my personal favorite of the album is “Revolutionary Culture”, which is by far one of the most unique on the album. It features a futuristic voice in the background, vocal effects and makes you think about everything going on around you in the world. Point to touch, music that challenges you to reevaluate your surroundings and look within yourself should be considered the 8th Great Wonder of the World, and luckily for listeners everywhere, Positive Disturbance specializes in just that.
