Seanzy Debut EP Review: “Doubt”

With “Doubt” being Austin-based artist Seanzy’s first EP release, you’d think you know what to expect. First EP’s are something musicians typically fondly look back on as an artifact of their ground level on the elevator to success, a time of reckless desire but not much knowledge. This, however, is a bit of a different story. If there’s one thing I could say to describe this particular EP, it would be the cliché but fitting phrase “best of both worlds.”  It’s the full package; an exceptional level of realism and radio quality music.

“Doubt” consists of five songs and two bonus tracks, to be released August 14th on iTunes. The title track, which has already been released as a single to the public, is the perfect gateway to let Seanzy’s lyrically based artistic style shine. Incredibly deep and somewhat dark lyrics encased in a low, consistent beat, the only way I can accurately describe this one is to compare it to a single room in an art gallery, where the only painting in the room is so vivid you can’t look away. It’s impossible to overlook the emotional basis of this song, and it’s still somehow remarkably catchy.

Other star tracks include “Fading”, a wistful melody chronicling being lost in the fog between who you used to be and who you’re becoming with an electric pop edge, and “She’s Wanting More”, which is arguably the most catchy of the entire EP. Complete with diverse vocal effects and a likeness to rock style pop music, Seanzy observes the obvious self destruction of a girl through smooth, direct lines. However, when you reach “Tears Fall” is when a pause and double take are most necessary. It’s important, because it’s the only song in which we see a softer side of the artist himself. Written about the death of his grandmother, through this song you’re all but physically transported to the day he wrote this, the pain and thought process crystal clear.

All in all, “Doubt” accomplishes the image that most every artist aims for – a window in which it’s possible to not only see into one’s mind, but understand and enjoy the imagery presented to you. Despite the clearly difficult inspirations behind the music, it’s still easy on the ears and stimulating to the mind.
